Listen. I'm not saying I ever have favorite yoga students, but--
Elena, one of my longtime favorite yoga students (oops, I said it! Don't worry, though, you're all my favorites) contacted me this summer to share that she has joined a team working on Habitat for Humanity's Women Build campaign here in Chicago this October. Each year, Habitat Chicago's Women Build campaign brings hundreds of women together to help their fellow sisters attain the benefits that come with homeownership.
From Women Build:
Due to factors like the gender pay gap, women tend to have higher debt-to-income ratios and lower credit profiles. Thus, single women are denied mortgages at higher rates than single men, even though women are more reliable when it comes to paying their mortgages. This is a paradox that hinders women in their efforts to provide an affordable home for themselves and their families. About 80% of single-parent households are headed by women, and women are twice as likely to be the primary caretaker for an elderly parent. The double standard of being the main source of both care and income leaves women without adequate time and resources to dedicate to homeownership.
Elena and her team, A Woman's Place is Building a House, are asking all of us to join them in a special all-levels yoga practice to raise funds for the October 2020 build. We'll chat a little first, Elena will share more about her team and the event, then we'll move our bodies. Our yoga practice will celebrate our IMMENSE STRENGTHS. The strengths needed to build in our communities, emotionally and physically. We'll also celebrate our IMMENSE JOY (with a bangin' playlist by women artists around the world).
